An EKG test or electrocardiogram is used to record your heart signals. Doctors recommend the test to patients who are experiencing symptoms such as chest tightness and discomfort, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, and heart palpitations, which may indicate a heart problem.
The EKG is a very common test that is performed in a doctor’s office, testing facility, or hospital. The results are available much faster than other types of tests. In fact, oftentimes, doctors can discuss the results of EKG tests with patients right away.
What Issues Can An EKG Test Reveal?
An EKG test can detect arrhythmias, blocked arteries, a narrowing of the arteries (indicative of coronary heart disease), a thickening of the heart walls, and other structural and valve problems. The EKG test results can also reveal a history of heart attacks. If you are receiving treatment for heart disease, the results of an EKG test can also tell the doctor if your treatment is working or needs to be adjusted for better results.
How An EKG Test Works
The process of conducting an EKG test involves placing electrodes on your chest, arms, and legs. Every time your heart beats, the EKG machine produces electrical signals, and activity is sent to an attached computer. The procedure takes anywhere between 3 to 10 minutes to complete. There is no pain associated with an EKG test. In fact, the only discomfort reported is during the removal of the electrodes from your skin once the test is over (a similar sensation to that of removing a band aid). You will not be exposed to any radiation or other harmful things at any time during the procedure.
Why Get An EKG Test?
An EKG test can show your doctor information to determine if there is an irregularity with your heart that needs to be addressed. You may not know there is something wrong with your heart until your condition has progressed significantly. An EKG can highlight a problem early on – even before symptoms show up. If you are experiencing symptoms, you may not know it is related to the heart. For example, shortness of breath is most often associated with the lungs or being overweight. However, for many, it’s a heart-related issue. An EKG test is an easy and quick way to figure out if there is an issue with the heart that needs to be addressed.
